The Mehfil offers a range of Urdu language learning programmes ranging from absolute beginner to advanced level. The beginner course aims to provide students with basic communicative skills in a variety of everyday settings. Intermediate and advanced level courses will enable students to use the Urdu language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, or professional purposes.
Introduction to Urdu Poetry
Urdu poetry is a much-celebrated aspect of Pakistani culture that continues to thrive through popular poetry recitals called mushaireh, which are also excellent platforms for Urdu poets to develop and cultivate their art form. This course comprises works composed by distinguished classical and contemporary Urdu poets.
Iqbaliyat
Our Iqbaliyat short courses focus on the close reading of poetry texts by Allama Iqbal, one of the most prominent poets of the subcontinent. The courses cover a selection of his most known works: Shikwa, Jawaab-e-Shikwa, Saaqi Naama and Khizar-e-rah. We also offer courses on Iqbal’s Persian poetry.
Introduction to Urdu Short Stories
Modern Urdu short story writers such as Saadat Hasan Manto, Ghulam Abbas, and Bano Qudsia have dealt with diverse social, moral, and political issues ranging from the trauma of partition and Pakistan's creation (1947) to the complexities of post-independence life within Pakistani and Indian society. The course is based on their acclaimed literary efforts and aims to introduce their works to the world outside South Asia.
